PET PHOTOGRAPHY COSTS AND WHY IT IS EXPENSIVE
The cost of running a photography business
I wanted to share with everyone my view on what it’s like trying to build a photography business in this age of technology and how I’ve found potential and current clients have viewed the costs booking a photo session with me.
The digital age has brought flexibility in taking and processing images. Everyone of all abilities can benefit from this. However, with flexibility comes a price. Camera equipment is still considerably more expensive and the need for additional resources for processing images, the time it takes to get a usable image and the effort that goes into creating each one is a work of photographic art.
Example of some editing work:
As a client, you may wonder why you pay higher costs for a personal photography session, digital images or prints? I have taken calls and emails from people asking for the cost to book a session, now not all, but some react with astonishment that I reply with my minimum of £150.00. I also have to add that I have some wonderful clients who come back time after time appreciating the value in the service and images they receive.
You may get asked “why does it cost so much “well my answer would be, the cost of a photographic session by a professional photographer has a lot to do with the time, equipment costs, artistic work and reputation of the photographer not to mention the costs of running a business.
You receive one to one attention for up to 2 hours at your home, out on location or both where your pet can explore, and be comfortable in their environment, with naturally captured expressions and behaviour.
What’s involved in a booking?
Let’s say that you have booked a photographer, you’ve looked at their website or seen images from another client who has work that you would love to have yourself of your family pet. Here is an example of what’s involved in the photographer’s time:
· Consultation, arrangements and paperwork for the session
· Pre-session prep time for equipment along with travel time to and from a location
· Photography Session 1-2 hours
· Uploading digital cards from the camera to a computer and filtering images ready for editing
· 6 hours plus of editing time to present you with a diverse gallery of edited images and/or uploading to a private online gallery for your viewing
The time spent for only ONE client can range from 12 hours to 20 hours dependent on the photographer’s service. You are not just paying for the two hours of session time, you are paying the photographer for 12-20 hours complete time for your session.
A Photography Business
A good quality professional camera with a selection of good quality lenses, digital storage and computer set up can run from £5,000-£30,000 dependent on the photographer. Even though you can purchase a really good quality SLR for less there are still other costs related to photography. A good lens for portrait photography isn’t cheap and a photographer would need 2 at least. A computer system with software for business and creative usage like Photoshop and Lightroom. Storage and backup systems.
Some other costs of running the business for example would be tax, Insurance, vehicle costs, advertising/marketing, sample pieces of work, etc.
A photographer does come at a cost, being skilled and experienced in their field of work. When you hire a professional photographer, you are hiring an expert experienced with the camera, the subject composition and editing software in most cases. To create good work a photographer not only has knowledge in the technical and creative aspects of photography but also good equipment.
Thought and consideration should be placed into hiring who is right for your family’s most precious members and turning those into a lifetime of photographic memories. Look at what you want out of your session and with the final images.
So this is why we charge what we do and offer an exclusive personal service for our wonderful clients and furry friends.
